The Vanessa Guilliam video presented by TEDx Talks (2013) focused on how the American justice system contributes to the racial caste system that systematically undermines black individuals. Aligning with the theme covering the 13th amendment in Documentary Films (2016), the Vanessa Gilliam video affirms that the United States (U.S.) penal system overwhelmingly strips civil rights of poor people of color. Alexander (2011) contributed that government laws and rules following the abolition of slavery have compromised people of color's basic freedoms, leading blacks to experience discrimination, exclusion, and social contempt. TEDx Talks (2013) confirmed that Jim Crow factors reappear once and after conviction. Such injustices can also be similarly seen in ghetto communities and underfunded schools geared to control and segregate children (TEDx Talks, 2013).
Combating the caste system contributing to institutional biases against blacks will require racial justice projects, according to TEDx Talks (2013). Expanding collaborations, such as seen with the Rights Watch in TEDx Talks (2013), will minimize the dehumanization of these at-risk individuals. In other words, further racial and social reconstruction is needed in the U.S. to ensure blacks have their basic rights (Alexander, 2011). Then, black Americans can expect a decrease in mass incarceration and police brutality after affirmative action is emphasized in educational and justice systems to ensure their civil and voting rights (Alexander, 2011).
Short-term goals in the Vanessa Video (TEDx Talks, 2013) were accomplished with paradigm-shifting acts. Sanford (2020) contended that these forms of activism parallel commitment, empowerment, respect, and service after identifying a social justice case. However, decision-making and relationship-building on paradigm-shifting acts can deteriorate or solidify effort-focused barriers (Sandford, 2020). Hence, the success of long-term goals related to the Vanessa Video (TEDx Talks, 2013) will be founded in demand. Indeed, Sanford (2020) stated, “Power concedes nothing without a demand.” These demands include utilizing artwork, charity work, customer reviews, education, letter writing, petitions, and walkouts to pressure appropriate legislation to rectify presented racial and social injustices (Sanford, 2020). Legislative pressure would increase educational attainment and labor outcomes to minimize poverty by providing black communities with necessary amenities, public services, and social conditions (Ellen & O’Regan, 2010). In turn, institutional discrimination, marginalization, microaggressions, othering, and tokenism, as read in Sanford (2020), for black Americans will dimmish alongside the second-hand citizenship that Alexander (2011) remarked.
